However, this post was a bit more about politicians, most of whom are not real economists, and most of whom do over-simplify things to point of being either supply-side or simple Keynesian. Certainly we see that with private insurance, and I have little doubt that many rural communities, which already have fairly bad roadways, would be even worse off if transportation was privatized. Why maintain a road that services only a few handfuls of people when you can maintain and charge a road that services thousands? Because they will complain? Who else will they enlist, or what other roadways will they As to Bush\u0026#39;s election win over Gore, while I personally was strongly opposed to it, and still find it quite humorous that he was elected without the popular vote, I\u0026#39;ve always told people, that yes, that is indeed the system, because at heart the Founders didn\u0026#39;t particularly think the populace all that capable, willing, or able to decide some of these matters, and thus it was more expedient to establish an Electoral College. Should it be done away with? Perhaps, but that\u0026#39;s an argument for changing the system from within, which I support. What I don\u0026#39;t support is the \u0026quot;get-your-guns\u0026quot; mentality that is often espoused by say, Fox \u0026quot;News\u0026quot; during their \u0026quot;opinion hours\u0026quot; (and to be quite honest, during their \u0026quot;news\u0026quot; hours as well). I\u0026#39;ve never liked them, and I think they largely distort or misjudge political movements and stances. There\u0026#39;s a lot of fuzzy lines and open space, and no hard-defined orbit.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EIn a sense, any government can be totalitarian, and can be in different ways. My comparison to Fascism is perhaps a bit premature - what I should have said is that many modern conservative planks strongly resemble the particular fascism of Nazi Germany - a great deal of pro-military thinking, fear-mongering about immigrants and outsiders, promoting unregulated capitalism and fear of eroding the \u0026quot;traditional\u0026quot; culture. Now, of course, in the long scale of history, having two political parties which don\u0026#39;t have SOMETHING in common would be exceptionally hard to pull off, so this is, at best, unsurprising, but I think it goes to the larger point I made elsewhere in that response that these kinds of comparisons are ridiculous and can\u0026#39;t be taken very seriously.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAnyway, yes, I am quite biased toward the \u0026quot;liberal\u0026quot; end of the spectrum, and I like to keep that in the open, so people know. This is actually a well-known psychological phenomenon, and basically part of the way we\u0026#39;re wired. Especially when dealing with people we don\u0026#39;t particularly 1) know or 2) like. So, on the face of it, I accept the criticism. Perhaps for many of these people, I have jumped to a few conclusions about their character.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EUnfortunately for others, though, we live in a digital and archival age - few things go out that aren\u0026#39;t saved somewhere (among the first lessons I will teach my children, should I ever have any). And among the chaff of those millions of video clips, emails, text messages, and others, there is a lot of evidence that these people\u0026#39;s primary motivation is little more than simple greed, and they could care less if they harm others so long as their bottom line is very safely in the black. We have all the emails from inside trading companies which show that they know they have toxic assets, but the money is just too good, and they\u0026#39;re \u0026quot;smarter\u0026quot; than the other guys, so it\u0026#39;ll all be okay, and if it crashes, well, they have a big safety net, so who cares? In this sense, it\u0026#39;s not that far of a jump to actually condemn some of these people who knew what was going on, knew that it was extremely high risk, and went on with it anyway. Again, I know, as we\u0026#39;ve discussed before, that for you this is a sign of the times and that humans are unfit to rule themselves.
